How this calculator works

Floor area is length × width, minus untiled areas. We divide the adjusted area by the face area of one tile, then add your waste factor and round up to full tiles and full boxes.

Tiles per box varies by manufacturer — check the box label, which also states the square feet per box. If you know coverage per box instead of pieces per box, divide your total square footage (with waste) by that number.

Frequently asked questions

How much waste should I add for floor tile?

10% for a straight layout in a rectangular room, 12–15% for offset or diagonal patterns, and up to 20% for herringbone. Keep one unopened box for future repairs.

Do I tile under kitchen cabinets or a vanity?

Most installers tile under appliances but not under fixed cabinets. Subtract the cabinet footprint, but tile under the dishwasher and fridge so the floor height stays even.

What size tile is best for a small floor?

12×24 and 12×12 are forgiving in small rooms. Very large tile (24×48) can make a small room choppy and needs a very flat floor; mosaic works anywhere but means more grout.
